PROJECT BACKGROUND
Located in downtown Westfield, Grand Junction Park began as part of the city’s efforts to revitalize the community and gain recognition as a forward-thinking city by designing a 7.8-acre greenspace that celebrates the convergence of local and regional recreational trails along with the growing vibrance of the Westfield community. DAVID RUBIN Land Collective was the lead designer and had only recently taken on the project before Westfield experienced a 100-year flood event that washed out a dam that resulted in inundated parts of downtown.
This event exposed the need for this proposed greenspace to incorporate sustainable stormwater management as a significant feature. The project site is bifurcated by Cool Creek, presenting an opportunity for restoration and mitigation in one simultaneous effort. As DAVID RUBIN began the design and planning process, they brought on Flatland Resources to aid in design and permitting regarding the restoration of Cool Creek which led to the proposal to connect park visitors directly to the water.
Flatland contributed their expertise in stream restoration and hydrology not only to procure permits and meet regulations but also to implement sustainable stormwater management techniques that blend seamlessly with other design elements. FLatLand was charged with converted an old farm ditch into a healthy ecologically divers stream that would draw people to the water’s edge.
Construction of the first phase of the project included restoring the first 200ft of Cool Creek which was carried out by Flatland. The stream plays in integral role in the overall park design, serving as the backbone for several other features including water engagement, a raised boardwalk, a wetland amphitheater, native plantings, and multiple bridges. Since project completion in 2021, the park has provided downtown Westfield with an ecologically resilient space that supports both community engagement and environmental stewardship, earning it an American Society of Landscape Architects Professional Award in 2023.
