Flatland Resources collaborated with partners to design and construct the preserve’s wetland systems, trails, and infrastructure, helping transform a contaminated industrial site into a functional, accessible landscape that supports water quality improvement, habitat restoration, and community engagement.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The John M. Craddock Wetland Nature Preserve is a restored urban wetland located along the White River on the east side of Muncie, just South of the Whitely neighborhood. This project site was identified as a high-impact watershed area that could mitigate the underground chemical contamination from surrounding industrial brownfields of the former Indiana Steel and Wire Factory. Restoration above the ground water contamination efforts were commemorative of environmentalist John Craddock who played a key role in the early efforts to improve and restore water quality in and around Muncie’s portion of the White River following the City’s industrial rise and decline.

Flatland Resources worked alongside Ball State University’s Landscape Architecture design-build program to carry out a masterplan design and construction for the nearly 30-acre nature preserve. Design elements were aimed towards providing the community with an accessible, beautiful greenspace while educating visitors on the importance of the history and ecology of the site. Implemented incrementally between 2000 and 2015 to align with funding availability, the project includes a network of trails, boardwalks, observational nodes, and wetlands designed to filter surface run-off pollutants and support habitat diversity.

Flatland worked with the Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Red-tail Land Conservancy to guide the project. Unique to the grant awards was the establishment and funding of an endowment for long-term maintenance. Today, the John Craddock Wetlands continue to serve the community by transforming contaminated industrial grounds into a functional wetland landscape, demonstrating the long-term value of restoration-driven design. The property is owned and maintained by Cardinal Greenway, Inc

WETLAND OVERLOOK STRUCTURE

I have had the opportunity to work with FlatLand Resources on many projects through various organizations to which I have served over many years.   As this site carries my namesake, it was very comforting to me knowing that FLatLand’s reputation as being respectful to all involved would yield a built environment that exceeded my expectations.  They are true stewards of the land.
